My Top 10 Locations - Royal Mile Edition

Top 10 Royal Mile Locations

All my recent blog posts have been about Edinburgh Tour Guides and what we are up to. We have been busy welcoming visitors and making their trips to Edinburgh and Scotland memorable through all our pre-made and some custom tours. We are very lucky in Edinburgh to be one of the most historic and beautiful cities in the world (not biased at all!). If you have only one day in Edinburgh, the best way to discover these historic beauties is venturing from Edinburgh Castle to The Palace of Holyrood House down the Royal Mile. Although, some of the best spots can be found just off The Royal Mile.

The Royal Mile is a historic stretch that runs through the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, a captivating journey through Scotland’s rich past and vibrant present. From ancient castles to hidden alleyways, the Royal Mile offers a plethora of experiences for every kind of visitor. Here are my top ten places to explore on or around this iconic street.

  • Edinburgh Castle
  • Victoria Street
  • The Grassmarket
  • Greyfriars Bobby
  • St Giles’ Cathedral
  • John Knox House
  • Museum of Edinburgh
  • Canongate Kirk
  • Scottish Parliament
  • Holyrood Palace

1. Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is top of my list of things to do on The Royal Mile. Edinburgh Castle dominates the city’s skyline and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. This historic fortress has played a pivotal role in Scotland’s history and houses Scottish Crown Jewels and the Stone of Destiny. A visit to the castle is a must, not only for the rich history, but for the amazing views of the city. (Secret tip: the best pictures of Edinburgh Castle are from The Grassmarket)

2. Victoria Street
A vibrant and enchanting destination that captures the essence of the city's historic charm. With its sweeping curve, colourful buildings, and variety of independent shops and eateries, this iconic street offers a unique blend of the old and the new. I fully believe there is something for everyone on this street, whether you're exploring its quirky boutiques, savouring local delicacies, or simply soaking in the atmosphere. For me, it is the picturesque nature of the street that makes it worthy of a spot on this list.
3. The Grassmarket
Tucked beneath the towering Edinburgh Castle, the Grassmarket is a historic and lively square in Edinburgh's Old Town that pulses with life and stories of the past. Once a bustling marketplace and the site of public executions, today it's a vibrant hub filled with cafes, pubs, and shops. The cobblestone streets and surrounding medieval architecture create an inviting atmosphere for visitors to explore. If you have time, I would recommend to climb the stairs at The Vennel, in my opinion the best view of the Castle is here.
4. Greyfriars Bobby
Greyfriars Bobby is one of Edinburgh's most beloved legends, symbolising loyalty and love. The story goes that the small Skye Terrier captured the hearts of locals when, after his owner's death in 1858, he guarded his master's grave in Greyfriars Kirkyard. Today, a bronze statue of Bobby stands just outside the churchyard. The story of Greyfriars Bobby is a touching reminder of the deep bond between humans and their canine companions, making it a must-see for anyone exploring Edinburgh's rich history.
5. St Giles’ Cathedral
St Giles' Cathedral, also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, is a majestic and historic landmark that stands proudly on the Royal Mile. With its stunning crown-shaped steeple and rich Gothic architecture, it has been at the heart of Edinburgh's spiritual life for nearly 900 years. Inside, visitors are greeted by beautiful stained-glass windows, intricate stonework, and the famous Thistle Chapel. Every one of the guides at Edinburgh Tour Guides has a different favourite window inside.
6. John Knox House
One of the oldest houses on the Royal Mile, John Knox House is associated with the Protestant Reformer John Knox. This 15th-century building is now a museum that offers insights into the turbulent times of the Scottish Reformation. The house’s period furnishings and artefacts make it a fascinating stop.
7. Museum of Edinburgh
The Museum of Edinburgh is a treasure trove of the city's rich history, located in the heart of the Royal Mile. Housed in a charming 16th-century building, the museum offers a journey through Edinburgh's past, showcasing a fascinating collection of artefacts. Among its highlights is the collar and bowl of Greyfriars Bobby, as well as exhibits that delve into the city's social and cultural heritage. With its captivating displays and well-preserved setting, the Museum of Edinburgh provides an engaging glimpse into the stories that have shaped the Edinburgh we have today.
8. Canongate Kirk
This elegant 17th-century church is the parish church for the Palace of Holyrood House and Edinburgh Castle. Canongate Kirk’s simple, serene interior contrasts with many of the city’s more ornate churches. The adjacent graveyard is the final resting place of notable figures, including the poet Robert Fergusson and the economist Adam Smith.
9. Scottish Parliament Building
Located at the foot of Edinburgh's Royal Mile, is a striking example of modern architecture in contrast to Edinburgh’s mediaeval old town. Designed by Catalan architect Enric Miralles and completed in 2004, the building's unique design features a blend of natural materials, organic shapes, and innovative forms inspired by the Scottish landscape and culture. Inside, visitors can explore the Debating Chamber, where Scotland's MSPs discuss and shape the nation's laws. The building also hosts exhibitions and public tours, offering insight into Scotland's political life and the creative vision behind its design.
10. Holyrood Palace
At the opposite end of the Royal Mile from Edinburgh Castle stands the Palace of Holyrood House, the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. Explore the opulent State Apartments, the ruins of Holyrood Abbey, and the beautiful gardens. The palace’s history is intertwined with figures such as Mary Queen of Scots.
The Royal Mile really is more than just a street. It is a depiction of Scotland's history and culture. Whatever your interests are: architecture, history, whisky, or anything in between, The Royal Mile offers an unforgettable journey through the heart of Edinburgh. These are my top 10 locations on the Royal Mile, but trust me when I say there are many, many more. I didn't even mention any of Edinburgh’s famous closes' which can provide some amazing history and photos (honourable mention below). If you want to see and hear more about Edinburgh, book with one of our guides today who can take you on a walk through our iconic history.

The name Eilean Donan, or island of Donan, probably comes from the 6th century Irish Saint, Bishop Donan who came to Scotland around 580 AD. In the early 13th century the first defensive structure was built on the island. The castle played a part in the Jacobite risings which ultimately resulted in its destruction. It lay in ruins for around 200 years until the island was purchased by Lt Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap in 1911. Lt Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap and his Clerk of Works, Farquar Macrae, spent the next 20 years rebuilding the Castle to her former glory. The castle was rebuilt according to surviving ground plans and was completed in the July of 1932. The Castle walls are 14feet thick and the island has its own fresh water supply. Eilean Donan is one of Scotland's most iconic Castles, surrounded by stunning scenery and at the meeting point of three sea lochs. No wonder it has appeared in several movies, Highlander, James Bond and more.
